Hello, I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but can anyone tell me what effect pedal(s) Bill Frisell used when playing in Naked City (I'm not familiair with his other music yet, except Masada guitars)? I'm a sucker when it comes to recognizing pedals by ear, my guess is a digital delay and/or chorus. At first I didn't like his guitar 'tone' but now I've become familiar with it, I really like it, especially when i saw him playing a Fender Strat (I thought jazz musicians hate Strats. Well maybe Frisell isn't THAT much a jazz musician as i thought). He seems to be able to extend his tones in a way you can do with a keyboard and the sound is very digital to my ears (thats why i think he uses digital delay). What i also like is that you cannot hear him pick a string with a pick (which can be very annoying sometimes). He also adds interesting other notes in his playing too. So enlighten me. Any cd recommandations too? Thanx in advance, gr. Eric _________________________________________________________________ MSN Zoeken, voor duidelijke zoekresultaten! http://search.msn.nl

I don't know offhand the exact pedals, but I've gotten close using a VST that simulates a four-head tape delay (like the old Roland Space Echoes) with a programmable amount of flutter and rolloff. That "underwater" sound of his seems to require a tiny bit of pitch variation. Or maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. And hey--Google is my friend. Turns out, I pretty much don't know what I'm talking about. See http://archive.guitarplayer.com/archive/artists/improv.shtml (And it seems he gets the flutter by bending the notes after they're plucked.)

He uses a volume pedal for that (I'd remembered this from another article, but the above confirms it). Depending on how your guitar's controls are laid out, you can train yourself to do it with your pinky on the volume knob as you pick. Hi I'm not all that familiar with his equipment - he definitly uses a looping pedal (actually several, some which apparently are no longer manufactured). But the reason I write is to mention Frisell's contribution to the book 'Arcana' (full reference below). There he has a short 'article' where he describes some fingering exercises: "Here are some exercises showing fingerings for stepwise passages that will allow notes to sustain simultaneously wherever possible. This is something that's done easily on the piano - by holding down the sustain pedal or simply holding down the fingers. ... The examples that follow make ample use of open strings and harmonics..." (Frisell, 2000, p. 140). Perhaps this technique goes some of the way towards explaining the aural phenomena you were wondering about. Full reference: Frisell, B. (2000), 'An approach to guitar fingering', in J. Zorn (ed.) "Arcana: Musicians on Music", New York: Granary Books, Inc., pp. 140-144 Regarding the strat playing: he's mentioned that in his development as a guitar player he began in 'Jim Hall' mode (he studied with Hall), but then took a liking to Hendrix.... -whit np. dj shadow - the private press On Thu, 6 May 2004, Eric van Rees wrote:

May be wrong, but I seem to remember reading it kind of the other way round, ie he was a huge Hendrix fan, then when he got into Jim Hall (jazz) mode, he put Hendrix aside completely, but later realised that even non-jazz influences were 'valid' so brought those elements back into his playing... And some Frisell recommendations for the original poster - two pretty varied ones that you could start with: 'Live' (with Joey Baron and Kermit Driscoll) and 'Quartet' (with Eyvind Kang, Ron Miles and Curtis Fowlkes) ...after that probably more of the ones based around the trio with Baron and Driscoll, i.e. 'This Land', 'Where In The World', 'Have A Little Faith', etc...
Hi Eric, what is so amazing about Bill Frisell is that he gets such a variety of sounds out of such a straightforward an un-crowded effect board. And that he's so recognizable with such widely used equipment. Though you wouldn't be able to emulate his sound without a delay (sometimes reverse, and sometimes of course distortion), most of it is due to his virtuous fading in notes after picking them, his leaving fingers on board to sustain notes while already playing new notes and his pitch bending, where he seems not only to pull strings but also to bend the neck (of his guitar ;-).
