III. I have two Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet CDs, both highly recommended: "Box" and "Pollo d'Oro" (written and performed with the Estonian band Ne Zhdali), both of which, I believe, are out of print, although they *might* be available through Jessica Lurie's website. (It's been a couple of years since I last went there.) And, yes, Billy Tipton was a sax player out of Washington State who played in swing jazz bands. Apparently none of his ex-wives(!) or adopted sons knew Billy was a woman until her death, when a medical examiner (or funeral director) came to the mobile home s/he lived in to pick up the body, and broke the news to her boys. Hi, Pollo D'Oro is a collaboration with the excellent Ne Zhdali, a band with Leonid Soybelman (Kletka red)... I know another record from those girls : "Box", on New World Records, NY... It's very good too. There is something about Billy Tipton in the booklet, a girl who choose to live her life as a man... It's said that even her wife and (adopted) children didn't know about the masquerade... "It isn' clear what motivated Tipton. Perhaps she feared that a woman saxophonist would always be treated as a novelty rather than as a serious artist. Or perhaps she found the business of jazz so inimical to women that simply sidestepping the issue was a more appealing alternative. We'll never know." The band also explain their way of creating music. That's interesting. Take care.
