Part I: Electric Masada in Györ
I haven't had time to write in a while so I will make my own little digest here, hope things aren't too out of date: 1) Electric Masada in Györ: my first time seeing Zorn after years of listening to his music, so it was a very exciting moment. The trip to Hungary was rally worth it. Acoustically, I am afraid the band was too loud for the beautifully decaying synagogue where the concert took place, especially because of the two drummers. For someone with little previous knowledge of the music I suppose the melodies were difficult to decipher. But it was still a very enjoyable performance, enhanced by the location and atmosphere. Joey Baron was my star, as he has been on almost every Masada live recording I've heard. I missed a bit more of interaction between Zorn and the crowd, maybe he was in a bad mood or just tired. Or is he always like that? Before EM went on stage there was a free performance by Misha Mengelberg and Han Bennink. I suppose nothing can go wrong with their experience and sense of humour. People really enjoyed that part of the evening. For the encore they sang a duet which was pretty funny. I had Zorn and Mori sitting next to me during this, and they were really enjoying it. I did not dare to talk to them though. Oh yeah, forgot to mention an anecdotic part of the concert. At one point during the EM set a photographer lady approached the stage to take some pics from close distance. I knew that would piss off Zorn. He began waiving at her, but she didn't react. So he took a bottle of water opened it and first threw the bottle-cap at her. No reaction either. He finally started throwing water at her; that was the end of the puppet show. As usual, Zorn was also asking the crowd how to tell the lady to go in Hungarian...
