Here's what's going to appear to be a REALLY stupid question, especially for someone who's been into Zorn as long as I have. Where should I start with the Ruins? I know nothing of their oeuvre other than the one Dave Brubeck cover on "In His Own Sweet Way." I like it okay but it didn't compel me to go out and buy every one of their albums (as I'm wont to do when seized by a musician or group). You guys all froth over the Ruins so much, though, that I feel like I'm missing out on something special. So please, if it's not too much trouble, recommend away. Thanks, Tom
Hi,

We'll be exchanging recs I think. First of all, I've been wanting to order that Brubeck tribute for a long time. Is it as good as it promises to be? My Ruins fave is their "Live at Mandala" album on Tzadik. It's really impressive. I admit I have never listened to it in one sitting, because their sound can be really appaling, but they're real virtuosos in their style. They don't really sound like a duo and, even knowing that they are, I can't figure out how they're capable of such a mass of sound with just a bass and drums. If you want to listen to something different than their usual stuff, their album with Derek Bailey, "Saisoro" is also very good. It's a bunch of studio improvisations but this time everyone seems to go his own way (nothing strange for Bailey though). I'm really looking forward to this new album on Ipecac.
