I remember reading a very bad review of this album in The Wire, accusing it of being their less dynamic outing. When I listened to it I couldn't believe it. If dynamism is just the maremagnum of sax squealing and heavy drumming, then "Talisman" is not dynamic. But the great thing about this live recording is that things flow naturally, often slowly but that doesn't make it less intense, imho. I admit I felt disappointed when I read in a Zorn interview that Painkiller continued but NC didn't, but seeing the direction the band has taken, I miss NC a bit less. Please explain. I won't jump down your throat if you have something you don't like about NC; I'm just curious.

No, no, I like everything about NC, every single thing. When I read that, maybe 8 or 10 years ago I prefered NC to continue instead of Painkiller, that's where my disappointment lied. I found Naked City to be "richer" than PK, but now it's obvious those projects where not comparable, they developed totally different concepts and followed unparallel paths, and after listening to that recent performance from last September with Patton and Drake on board, you can tell how much the music has evolved throughout the years. And "Talisman" is a good example of that. I guess I was too hooked-up with the genre-bumping and couldn't really grab Painkiller's more in-your-face approach. No "sicilian clans", you know.
