Well, white, fucked-up James Brown on drugs ;-) I liked it, something like punk-jazz, anti-esthetics, especially James is acting on a stage like a star(square), everything is sooo eggzagerated... and over-something. I really don't know how to say it. He acts like somebody who has very bad depresion after too much polish vodka: everybody is your friend now, and now you will tell me all bad stories of your life. I'm not sure people have received it well, but for sure it was... interesting experience :-) Musica Genera was a great festival, are you guys familiar with names like Sugimoto, Ambarchi, Dafeldecker, Noetinger??? __________________________________________________________________ Artur Nowak [.com] NP: Noonan / Bajakiran "Chips"

Hi, I was there also for the last day (sunday?), and it was one of the highlights for me this year. It was the first time for me to see Taku, and I really like that direction. So much tension (he must be the best payed musician per note). Also the Berlin section (Axel Dörner and Joe Williamson) works great, and it was really nice to see them play with the others and see how it matched. Ofcourse the best was the singing contest at the end in the bar of kana theatr . . . Arthur

Have you seen my photos? http://www.emd.pl/muzyka/m/musica_genera/2003photos.htm see the bottom. Sugimoto's concert was really amazin. Well, the whole festival was amazing :-) I enjoyed the set with Fuhler, Dafeldecker and Ania Zaradny. I have recorded the whole festiwal, I hope Robert will release something on his Musica Genera label. __________________________________________________________________ Artur Nowak [.com]
I have seen the photos and memory returns, very nice. We must have been standing next to each other.  Sugimoto's concert was really amazin. Well, the whole festival was amazing  Next week in Berlin seems to be also interesting, if you look at www.echtzeitmusik.de  for example: 10.10 at ausland:  otomo yoshihide - turntables, guitar, electronics sachiko m. - sine waves, sampler axel dörner - trumpet andrea neumann - inside piano annette krebs - guitar Â
:-) I enjoyed the set with Fuhler, Dafeldecker and Ania Zaradny.  That was some very concentrated piece of work. I found Fuhler, Dafeldecker and Ania Zaradny very classical (in a classical sence), almost improvised chamber music. Which is very new for me, and therefor interesting.  But the last two sets with Werner Dafeldecker, Taku Sugimoto, but especially Oren Ambarchi, Joe Williamson and Axel Dörner was the highlight for me.
Also I forgot his name, but i liked the polish drummer very much, would like to see more of him. He was in a completely different style of improvisation (old school, but ment as a compliment), and i would have preferd to see him play with some of the others and see how that worked (pitty i didn't see it all from the first day) Â
I have recorded the whole festiwal, I hope Robert will release something on his Musica Genera label.  I'd be certainly interested in hearing some of the works, or buying for that matter. Especially the stuff with Dörner, Williamson and Sugimoto.  Some of the stuff that i saw earlier that day, e.g. Gert-Jan Prins i wasn't so crazy for (typical dutch), neither his singing at the bar (which was even more typical dutch;)  (btw i'm from holland myself)  Do you live in Szczecin? Tried to find some heavy food, but all i found was pizza or kebab, a pitty.  Arthur

Thanks a lot for this info, I'll be there sor sure! No, I don't live in Szczecin, I'm from Katowice, south Poland. Same distance to Szczecin or Berlin (or Vienna) - what a great place to live :-) __________________________________________________________________ Artur Nowak [.com]
Hi, James Chance will also be playing here in Spain next month (for the first time, I think). Seems like a very promising show, at least for the legend-factor.

Taku Sugimoto? If so, I've only heard him with Gunter Schuller and Keith Rowe in some Erstwhile album I've got at home. Although not a daily play, it's certainly a fantastic recording for anyone interested in slow-paced, minimal improvisation. Anything else by Sugimoto that I shouldn't miss? Best, Efrén del Valle

The one you mention is my favorite, though it's Muller and not Schuller, who clearly wouldn't work for this context. Sugimoto these days has gotten so spare, that I'm not as much as interested in his work, but his two releases with Kevin Drumm are pretty good, as well as his work with Annette Krebs. You might want to check out "Foldings" with Akiyama, Nakamura and Wastell on the Confront label. He's also on the Off-Site recordings in varied combinations on the IMJ label as well as on the IMJ box set, which is now out of print. Erstwhile will be releasing a box set of the Amplify festival in Tokyo that I attended last October, and Sugimoto is featured quite prominently--in the Muller/Rowe combination as well as one with Kurzmann/Stangl. I like the former one better. The box is schedule to have seven CDs and a DVD and will be available for around $150 in November if purchased from Jon Abbey directly. Check out http://www.erstwhilerecords.com for more details. I've heard much of the music on the box (except for the non-festival recordings) and I can heartily recommend it.

Yes, I've been listening to a ton of this kind of stuff recently. I've already accounted for the Sugimoto, but the Noetinger/Erik M CD on Erstwhile is terrific, but also the Noetinger/Marchetti/Voice Crack CD on Grob called "Double Wash" is also excellent. Two of my favorites of the year have been Ambarchi's duo with keith Rowe on Staubgold called "Flypaper" and his Audiosphere release with Gunter Muller and Voice Crack called "Oystered." I've been listening to a fair bit of Dafeldecker as well--mainly the Absinth CD with Tilbury, Hautzinger, and Sachiko M--also on Grob, and the green and orange releases on Charhizma. The green one is the most recent and has Dafeldecker in combination with Kurzmann, Drumm, Erik M, Dieb 13, and Noetinger. This one has been getting a lot of play recently.

So you got the 411 on Sugimoto, can't tell much on Ambarchi and Dafeldecker but I know Jérôme Noetinger a little better. He's the guy behind Metamkine, which is a distributor/mailorder catalog (I might as well give them a plug: http://www.metamkine.com/, of course I am not affiliated with them in any way), a label (with the well known "Cinéma pour l'Oreille" series of short musique concrète pieces; their releases are too numerous to mention but you'll find names like Luc Ferrari, Michel Chion, Michèle Bokanowski, Bernhard Günter, Jim O'Rourke, Éliane Radigue, Erik M, Lionel Marchetti or Jean-François Laporte), and a group (Cellule d'Intervention Metamkine, with Christophe Auger and Xavier Quérel). He plays a lot of improvised shows using electro-acoustic devices, one of his projects that I really like is his Revox duet with Lionel Marchetti. He can be heard on lots of recordings lately, such as a duet with Erik M on Erstwhile, and as part as groups, the better known being MIMEO, but let's not forget Quintet Avant who put out a great LP on Mego earlier this year. that's probably too large a band to be the piece in question. it IS another great album, though. sean Couldn't it be Joe Harriott? A record called Indo-Jazz Suite, or something like that? Craig L>
