Hi, Hamid Drake is an incredibly prolific drummer. For really heavy free-jazz polyrythms, I think you should check him along with Peter Brötzmann, William Parker and Toshinori Kondo/Roy Campbell on the Die Like A Dog Quartet albums. Not easy listening but really enjoyable when you get the Ayler spirit behind the radicalism. The duo with William Parker you mentioned could be something related to their album "Piercing the Veil" on AUM Fidelity, in which there's a bit of every style you can imagine. Same with his drumming in Roy Campbell's Pyramid Trio. There's an excellent album by the trio on Delmark titled "Ethnic Stew and Brew", anything from straightforward jazz to funk to reggae there. I also saw him in a reggae environment with a David Murray group some months ago. He was the highlight (the only one actually). And of course, his work with Vandermark. After seeing Hamid Drake "join" Painkiller I've become more interested in his work. Where is a good place to begin? By chance, yesterday or the day before that, I heard a very cool piece he did with William Parker, as a duo I believe. Slightly funky, with perhaps a bit of an afrobeat feeliing. What could it be?
Thanks for any tips or advise
