Regarding the strat playing: he's mentioned that in his development as a guitar player he began in 'Jim Hall' mode (he studied with Hall), but then took a liking to Hendrix....
May be wrong, but I seem to remember reading it kind of the other way round, ie he was a huge Hendrix fan, then when he got into Jim Hall (jazz) mode, he put Hendrix aside completely, but later realised that even non-jazz influences were 'valid' so brought those elements back into his playing... And some Frisell recommendations for the original poster - two pretty varied ones that you could start with: 'Live' (with Joey Baron and Kermit Driscoll) and 'Quartet' (with Eyvind Kang, Ron Miles and Curtis Fowlkes) ...after that probably more of the ones based around the trio with Baron and Driscoll, i.e. 'This Land', 'Where In The World', 'Have A Little Faith', etc...
