I picked up Otomo's New Jazz Quintet cd "Live"on DIW where he plays guitar. Exceptionally well I might add. Does he have any other jazz cds out there that are similar to this? Cheers,
I just got this CD the other day, great stuff. I was lucky enough to witness a live performance of the New Jazz Quintet last month at the Shinjuku Pit Inn (the CD was also recorded there last year) which was absolutely incredible -- they started the show by playing the first two tracks from "Out To Lunch"... bliss... -- even more adventurous than the CD, with intense moments of droning and feedback and inventive playing. There are two CDs on Tzadik of the quintet, I never really got into the first one ("Flutter", featuring Merzbow and Sachiko M. as guests), but the second one is really nice ("Dreams" with guest vocalists Phew and Jun Togawa), even though it sounds pretty different from the live stuff as it is really a collection of songs. There is another interesting recording of the quintet, a vinyl LP whose name escapes me, featuring two tracks from the quintet ("Eureka" from the DIW CD, and a very different version of "Sweet Pea") as well as a track from the super-group Date Course Pentagon Royal Garden (from a previously released album) and some lock grooves. A beautiful LP but expensive, and maybe hard to find (and only 14 minutes are exclusive...) Oh, and of course the "Ensemble Cathode" CD on Improvised Music from Japan is a must! Julien
