i need some help: one of my favorite records right now is the Lucky Stars "Hollywood & Western" relased on Ipecac some 3 years ago.
The Lucky Stars molded themselves largely after Western stuff (their lead singer works at the Autry Museum of Western Heritage -- very knowledgable guy). Also, they did a ton of music for SPONGEBOB. If you're looking for stuff in that style, you should probably go right to the main sources -- Bob Wills (on Columbia), Spade Cooley, Floyd Tillman, Cliff bruner. However, if you're seriously trying to find the absolute best country music you can -- Merle haggard -- DOWN EVERY ROAD (4 disc box on Capitol) and the Jimmie Rogers box set on JSP. I know it sound like deep buying (nine discs total), but trust me on this. I know my way around these waters better than most. The other stuff that's been recommended on the list is real good, but I'd start with Merle and work your way back as you're listening to Jimmie and working your way forward. Don't forget to stop at Bill Monroe in both directions. If you meet people who do not like Jimmie, Merle, and Bill Monroe, avoid them. skip h NP: THE COMPLETE FLATT & SCRUGGS ON MERCURY (1 cd, all good stuff)
