i thought davis' piece was either irrelevant or at least underreported. as a journalist, i was dismayed at how much he relied on what happened at a panel (that wasn't yesterday and wasn't the news). there are certainly other people he could have talked to, other angles he could have considered. but that's my journalisto reaction. my music fan reaction was that us jazz/new music fans by and large simply do not care. we're really less concerned about musicians' personal lives (unless it has to do with sickness or hardship, where there's a true demonstration of caring) then fans tend to be in more personality-driven genres. and that's something that surely could have come out in the piece. to use a case from our living room here, i remember now and again someone asking if zorn was gay (which, if you see him around nyc, you'll pretty quickly understand him not to be, btw). the topic hardly generates a thread of interest here. davis wasn't writing about zorn, of course, and most of my examples would be outside his musical world. but when i finished the piece, i was left wondering why he wrote it. _________________________________________________________________ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com
