There is no difference. It is basically the same files except that the headers are different.
Here are the definitions:
A .WAV file is also called a RIFF file (Resource Interchange File Format). The specification comes from Microsoft, to work on their Wintel platforms.
An AIFF file (Audio Interchange File Format), is functionally identical to a .WAV file, only it's Apple spec to work on Macs. that's not completely correct... iirc, wav files are (usually?) stored in big endian, aiffs in little endian... also setting loop points in aiff files is different (but as a consumer, you won't need that)
