Hi I'm not all that familiar with his equipment - he definitly uses a looping pedal (actually several, some which apparently are no longer manufactured). But the reason I write is to mention Frisell's contribution to the book 'Arcana' (full reference below). There he has a short 'article' where he describes some fingering exercises: "Here are some exercises showing fingerings for stepwise passages that will allow notes to sustain simultaneously wherever possible. This is something that's done easily on the piano - by holding down the sustain pedal or simply holding down the fingers. ... The examples that follow make ample use of open strings and harmonics..." (Frisell, 2000, p. 140). Perhaps this technique goes some of the way towards explaining the aural phenomena you were wondering about. Full reference: Frisell, B. (2000), 'An approach to guitar fingering', in J. Zorn (ed.) "Arcana: Musicians on Music", New York: Granary Books, Inc., pp. 140-144 Regarding the strat playing: he's mentioned that in his development as a guitar player he began in 'Jim Hall' mode (he studied with Hall), but then took a liking to Hendrix.... -whit np. dj shadow - the private press On Thu, 6 May 2004, Eric van Rees wrote:
Hello,
I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but can anyone tell me what effect pedal(s) Bill Frisell used when playing in Naked City (I'm not familiair with his other music yet, except Masada guitars)? I'm a sucker when it comes to recognizing pedals by ear, my guess is a digital delay and/or chorus. At first I didn't like his guitar 'tone' but now I've become familiar with it, I really like it, especially when i saw him playing a Fender Strat (I thought jazz musicians hate Strats. Well maybe Frisell isn't THAT much a jazz musician as i thought).
He seems to be able to extend his tones in a way you can do with a keyboard and the sound is very digital to my ears (thats why i think he uses digital delay). What i also like is that you cannot hear him pick a string with a pick (which can be very annoying sometimes). He also adds interesting other notes in his playing too. So enlighten me. Any cd recommandations too? Thanx in advance,
gr. Eric
