movie?
I have watched it twice and I like it, specially considering how much Heuermann had to brighten up in order to complete the documentary with some relatively old interviews (they were abruptly cancelled) and the live footage. Is there much music? Not that much. Basically Cobra, Masada Quartet, Emergency, Naked City, Hemophiliac, Chimeras, Redbird and other chamber stuff, etc... However, these are short snippets which are often interrupted by commentaries. On the other hand, this is a documentary, not the typical videotaped concert and although I would have loved to see complete performances, I understand it's unfair to consider it a failure.
Interviews?
I thought they'd be fewer, but unfortunately, they are not that revealing. Zorn basically repeats what we've read in the few printed interviews available through the years: his maladjustment in Japan; Jewishness; why Naked City was over, ... It's great to see some brief images of Zorn at home with an incredible LP/CD/Book collection, really amazing. The list of appearances is enormous,
does this mean many very short clips or what?
Yes, many short clips. Besides that, some of the footage comes from chamber music performances and therefore, that extends the list of appeareances quite a bit.
