Hitting a note on any fret (except #12) will end up playing 2 different notes. One on the body side of the guitar (picked up by your standard, built in pick-ups), and one on the neck side, that isn't normally amplified... except if you add an extra pickup on the neck like Frith. Listen carefully, (in particular those "tapping" parts, where it's more obvious), and you should hear the two notes ringing together. (Frith's solo albums feature very good examples of that also). - Pascal. -----Message d'origine----- De : zorn-list-bounces+pascal.cortes=geoter.fr@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:zorn-list-bounces+pascal.cortes=geoter.fr@mailman.xmission.com]De la part de Renaud BERTRAND Envoyé : mardi 20 janvier 2004 07:45 à : db@biink.com; Craig Lieske Cc : zorn-list@mailman.xmission.com Objet : Re: Re: Frith's Guitar Zappa had the same kind of equipement back in the early 70s (a Marcus Berry type). It catches better the left-handed played notes (mostly unpicked notes for Zappa, lots of other things for Frith).

Hey everybody, maybe one of you guys can answer this: I have been watching Fred Frith's "step Across the Border", and I am wondering just what the hell that black box-type thing is on the headstock of his guitar. I've been playing guitar for years, and just can't seem to figure out what the hell that thing is. It's driving me crazytrying to figure out its' purpose. Craig L.
It's a pickup.
