Apologies if this has already been mentioned (i'm going through old email): Medeski was part of a band that played europe in 94 that included billy martin, zorn, and ribot; they did masada tunes. Maybe this is the early version you have in mind? cheers, -whit On Fri, 30 Apr 2004, Andrew Mortensen wrote:

Hi, last Saturday I went to the spanish concert, I finally met Zorn for the first time, and was a really unforgettable experience. The show was really intense, combining a high variety of things (the concert started with a chaotic introduction in the style of cobra, and finished with a funky version of a masada piece!!) Baron and Wollessen doing wildest solos continuously, Zorn using his variety of techniques and directing the musicians in a chaotic way,Ribot at the beginning stayed really quite but at half show he begun to play more frenzied(using the tooth playing a la Hendrix and shaking the guitar constantly),Mori creating her usuals electronic ambients with a high coherent sense, Saft was probably the most virtuosistic player of the night, and the rest (Dunn and Baptista)was simply perfect. All great. I really feel that I'm not back to this world yet. -------------------------------------------

The set was pretty chaotic and distorted, more then last year in Ghent. I'd love to see cyro in action! In an encore Zorn did some of his great sax techniques using only the mouthpiece etc. As mentioned in the 'techniques'- thread I've seen Zorn pushing the bell against his leg a lot of times, and he did a lot of 'Prrt Prrt Prrt'! He was so good to sign my 17 cd booklets and even had time for a little chat.

I saw El.Mas. last night in Brussels. Quite an intense performance, as always. I really liked the double-drummer assault (plus the percussion). Ikue Mori contributed some nice electronics and Ribot didnt play as much as I remember him playing last time I saw them; my impression is that Saft contributed quite a lot this time. Overal, plenty of frantic moments and with some nice jump-cut parts. Compared to their show in Den Haag last year, this show left me less of a "Miles-Davis-70's" impression and a stronger "game-Zorn" feeling. And it is always so nice when they get back to a familiar masada melody after creating havoc!
My problem is that my recollection of the day is the train trip, which lasted four times longer than the show, rather than the concert itself.
