Hi Arthur and all, "Dance..." is not a bad album at all, the problem is the expectations created by the Tzadik promo actually. It introduced Israelite as some sort of Naked City/Mr. Bungle/Frank Zappa blend I'm still looking for any real connections to those musicians other than a certain taste for ecclecticism. The album opens with a vintage-sound that crisscrosses typical Jewish scales with a Nino Rota flavor and everything looks really promising. From that on, the whole thing is about genre-clashing with some negative surprises along the way: some heavy metal guitar riffs are unbearable and suspiciously similar to some Bungle tune I can't remember the title of right now. Besides that, those unexpected turns don't seem to fit really well into the overall sound -some would call them gratuitous, I'm sure-. Can't give too many details because I lent it to a friend after four or five listens- bad sign! However, Israelite's imagination is undeniable and at least it goes beyond the jazz + klezmer Tzadik formula- which is fine with me if you don't own 200 of their releases. Israelit, on Tzadik? It looks pretty interesting, but I wasn't able to track down any soundsclips anywhere on the net. His webpage http://www.koby.info/ isn't particularly helpfull.
"Koby Israelit is a young Israeli musician living in London who enjoys smashing genres together and grinding them into dust. Koby has absorbed an astounding array of musics, and blends them together here in dynamic and colorful musical world all his own. As complex and finely crafted as naked City, Frank Zappa or Mr. Bungle at their best, the music on Dance Of The Idiots, KobyÂs debut recording, is a passionate exploration of the Jewish experience. Cantorial Death Metal, Nino Rota Klezmer, Balkan Surf, Catskills free improvisation. YouÂve never heard such sounds."
