I love all PK! Talisman is great - I did a post AGES ago about it, saying how good it is. I've always LOVED the ambient CD, great to just put on & sit there & close your eyes. if there's anything I'm not that keen on, it's the longer pieces on "Buried.." & "Guts..." - but they're still great! Hey.......! Just checked Talisman out, and gotta say I loved it. Ok, IMO albums never come to fruition until the thrid or sometimes fourth listen, but having been already into Painkiller, I got into it straight away. I was a little worried about how the actual sound of the recording would be, seeing as it is a live recording, but it sounds great. Ive yet to hear a Painkiller moment that I didnt like, I guess if I had to name one it would be the "Ambient" disc from the excellent Execution Ground. I remember reading a very bad review of this album in The Wire, accusing it of being their less dynamic outing. When I listened to it I couldn't believe it. If dynamism is just the maremagnum of sax squealing and heavy drumming, then "Talisman" is not dynamic. But the great thing about this live recording is that things flow naturally, often slowly but that doesn't make it less intense, imho. I admit I felt disappointed when I read in a Zorn interview that Painkiller continued but NC didn't, but seeing the direction the band has taken, I miss NC a bit less.
