I forward this (relatively long) message from Helma Schleif of FMP. With great pain we feel obliged to inform you that this morning, Sept 21, 2 p.m. PETER KOWALD passed away in New York City. We dedicate this year´s TOTAL MUSIC MEETING to our friend, the great musician and founding member of TMM and FREE MUSIC PRODUCTION Peter Kowald. please find in the following this year´s TOTAL MUSIC MEETING program: TOTAL MUSIC MEETING 2002 Oct 31 - Nov 2 @ PODEWIL, Berlin-Mitte Concerts / Workshop / Forums / Exhibitions "All play is first and foremost free action" (Johan Huizinga) "Music that matters" is the central theme of this year´s International Festival of Improvised Music, with the main focus on the art of the trio. The two oldest working trios in Improvised music will get the festival off to a terrific start on the 31st - the legendary Evan Parker Trio with Barry Guy (b) and Paul Lytton (dr) and the Schlippenbach Trio with Paul Lovens (dr) and Evan Parker (ss,ts). It will be a unique highlight because these trios, which were both founded in the early seventies, rarely ever perform concerts together. The Parker Trio will perform again on the Nov 1 and the Schlippenbach Trio on the Nov 2. Günter Christmann, another founding father of free improvised music, has been playing trombone and cello in diverse international groups since 1969. Since 1979 he has been developing his innovative VARIO projects which have set milestones for musical and multimedial performance. Recently Günter has been working with two live-electronics players from Berlin, Serge Bagdhassarians and Boris Baltschun. This will be their first opportunity to present this new trio which they call mal d´archive. Serge Bagdhassarians and Boris Baltschun were guests of the festival TMM compact in 2000, where they performed in a quartet with Lars Scherzberg and Jacob Thein. Berlin debut. The Italian Trio Ossatura with Elio Martusciello (electroacoustic devices, e-guit), Fabrizio Spera (amplified objects, percussion, electronics) and Luca Venitucci (piano & sampler) is a discovery for Berlin. They have been working together since 1995. Ossatura´s musical approach is based on critical analysis of sound structures and exploration of organisational models. They combine conventional instrumental techniques with manipulation and electronic amplification of sound making devices. (Nov 1) Berlin debut. The New Flags is a German-English-Chinese acoustic trio with Wolfgang Fuchs (ssi, bcl, cbcl), Roger Turner (drumset, percussion) and Xu-Feng-Xia (guzheng, voice), which was formed in June of this year in Berlin. The players combine European improvisational structures with fragments and abstractions of traditional Chinese music. The result is an immense spectrum of dynamics ranging from silence to fff. (Nov 1) Two generations of musicians from Berlin, Chicago and San Francisco collaborate in Three October Meetings. The trio of Wolfgang Fuchs, Damon Smith (b) and Jerome Bryerton (dr) creates music which is defined by a collective understanding of sound and silence, noise and tone, individual and collective and clear lines and group textures. (Nov 2) Berlin debut. Portuguese flute virtuose and composer Carlos Bechegas (piccolo fl, alto-, C soprano flute) discovered improvised music after studying classical flute and playing rock-jazz and bebop. He is highly in demand as a soloist, primarily because of his unique range of extended techniques and his use of live electronics. He is known for his work with Carlos Zingaro, Peter Kowald, Derek Bailey, Han Bennink, Phil Minton and Steve Lacy. (Oct 31) Berlin debut. Wu Wei (sheng, erhu) and Xu Feng-Xia (guzheng, voice) both studied at Shanghai Conservatory and have lived in Germany for the last few years. They utilize the dynamics of two different musical cultures to create their own rich improvisational vocabulary. They perform on traditional Chinese instruments such as sheng, erhu, guzheng and voice. (Oct 31) The "anarchistic fire of free jazz" still burns bright 30 years after the formation of Doppelmoppel (Conny Bauer and Johannes Bauer, tb, Uwe Kropinski and Joe Sachse, g) This is a rare Berlin appearance of the world renowned quartet. This group is still revered with cultish fervor in the new states of Germany. ( Oct 31) The Duo Bertoncini / Lehn was formed only recently. Tiziana Bertoncini is a violinist and painter living in Pisa who has worked with diverse improvising musicians, painters, poets and dancers, such as Luca Venitucci (Ossatura) Roger Turner (The New Flags) and Peter Kowald. Thomas Lehn is recognized as the virtuoso of the analogue synthesizer and is one of the most in-demand players on the scene. He is also a composer and trained classical and jazz pianist. He has played with all major improvising musicians around the world. He performed at TMM compact 2000 in the trio Lingua (Wolfgang Fuchs & Fabrizio Spera).(Nov 2). Berlin debut. The grand finale of the festival is the performance of a solidarity big band that will be assembled during the course of the festival. This promises to be a very special musical highlight.
