My ex-girlfriend was really into alt-country and old rockabilly. She got me into this incredible female vocalist/guitarist named Wanda Jackson. She has a gritty voice and tough lyrics. She was definitely ahead of her time. I'm not sure what albums to suggest because I don't own any (yet). But Wanda Jackson is definitely worth checking out. The guitar playing is amazing at times, some of the stuff would surely impress Ribot or Frisell; very very creative for its time.
