is this an actual jazz/music venue with a really bad name or a fast-food joint?
It's both!

Slightly less flippantly, Pizza Express is a chain of pizzerias in the UK. I rather like them, but I know some people don't. Several of them around the country put on local jazz musicians, but the one you've probably heard of is the original one in Dean Street, Soho, where they've put live music on in their basement since the sixties. It's kind of like a staging post between the expense-account wankers at Ronnie Scott's and the groovy music but car-park ambience of Camden's Jazz Cafe. There are people there that just appear to want to ignore "some Jazz" while they eat their Pizza, but then there are some aficionados who enjoy what they're listening to. Fellow z-lister Dave and I went there on two consecutive nights last year to see The Necks, which was a brave thing to put on there I feel (although it did sell out). Bill Frisell has played there too, but it's mainly the kind of stuff I'd pay not to see. http://www.pizzaexpress.co.uk/indexf.htm Hope this helps! Alastair -- Personalised email by http://another.com
