hello everybody. i've seen the movie "zatoichi" in venice last week and if you want my opinion is one of the best he did so far. to give you some coordinates on my tastes i think he never made a bad film, i love them all, including "boiling point" and "getting any", and i think "dolls" is one of the best movies ever made; still my favorite one is "sonatine". "zatoichi" is very amusing, and very violent. it's clearly a new direction on the surface (it is his first samurai-film, and the first based on a subject he didn't write (with the exception of "violent cop"); he used quite a lot of digital effects; the music is NOT by joe hisaishi and sometimes borders on hip-hop(!!); he acts as a blind swordsman and his hair are blond(!!!)), but it's still pure kitano in every part. of course there are such surprising genius twists you wouldn't expect, and that make it a real masterpiece. the final scene for example, it's so out of place and still fits perfectly in the whole. i'd already like to watch it again. so i think it's not comparable to "kikujiro" or "dolls" or even "hana-bi", because it obviously lacks the "humanitarian" side that surfaced (even if in a glacial way) on those movies. it reminded me more of "sonatine" or "brother", for example. anyway, if you like kitano, don't miss "zatoichi". bye nic ______________________________________________________________________ Yahoo!
