hi all
one thing ive found important when reading DonQ is to understand the jokes and references,
so I'm fond of the penguin edition, even tho mine has the notes in the back instead of below.
there are so many references to politics and culture of the epoch that i find that to be even
more important that the style of the translation itself.

a funny memory: when the film of the musical version of don quixote, man of la mancha,
was released, the inimitable critic rex reed, a real jerk, said it was horrible because
(im paraphrasing) the whole film was fecal in color.  another critic
slammed reed, saying whaddaya want from a film which takes place in a dungeon.

i look forward to renting the film again; i havent seen it since its '70s release.

this summer, however, im not gonna finally finish don quixote,
(like romances, some things are better when they dont actually end...)
but instead finally go through the entire schubert lieder on disc Lp set from emi.
its hard to travel with, tho, so im taking with me the great whale instead.
