Mr. John Zorn, First, I would like to declare my contentment for being able to contact you and reveal my admiration for your work. It is the characteristics of your work along with my interest in music in general that lead me to propose a collaboration in my "Written Paintings" project. I suppose that you are very busy, but I think that collaboration I am asking you doesnÂt require too much time. I have graduated in Plastic Arts  Painting, from the Faculty of Fine Arts of Porto, Portugal. My project "Written Paintings" must establish connections between the plastic language and the musical language, having as an interface the written language. The descriptive text and the interpretation (author / work / interpreter) are fundamental points oh this work  How to paint a music? How to write a painting? How to paint a text? I would like to realise a series of idealising paintings for different musicians / composers. Each one will be asked to idealise a painting but they have to translate his own idea into words  the result of that will be a descriptive text. Finally, I will make my interpretation from this "descriptive text" turning it into to a painting idealised by each author. This is a work of communication and interpretation. To collaborate in this project, I selected a group of musicians /composers, who have a work with which I feel great sympathy, as I feel about your work. Already in II a.d. , Philostrato, in one of his "Images", presents paintings of a gallery of Naples. He describes and comments on the paintings, explaining their meaning. It was as if one painted with words, giving the opportunity of knowing the painting through description to those who could not see them. The relationship between different forms of communication can be extended in time if we consider "Improvisation" and "Compositions" of Kandinsky based in music. I also quote "Paintings of One Exhibition" of Mussorgsky, "Monotone Symphony" of Yves Klein , "White Paintings" of Rauschenberg, which would be a pretext for John CageÂs "4Â33 "Hypothetical Stream", 1996, of William Forsythe from the book "Tiepolo Drawings", etc. Since the 50Âs / 60Âs the relationship between the different artistic forms (already begun with the Dada Movement or with the gothic cathedrals) and the development of new technologies become a constant which yet remains through Multimedia (not exclusively in the area of electronics). I will now try to explain my suggestions for the work  Written Paintings; As a plastic artist I would like to interpret, make a painting from my interpretation of a descriptive text that represents a painting idealised by you. In other words; What I want exactly from you is:  Inside your musical universe, you must idealise (mental conception) a pictorial composition and then "translate" that painting into a text - You must describe the image by words. The text (as a "descriptive memory") must content all the "instructions" or "indications" (the conceptual aspects, the forms, the colours, precise elements you would like to see represented in the painting, expressiveness...) that you find to be necessary so that I can interpret it and transform it into a painting. So, I want to realise / to interpret a painting created by you. That's why I entitle my project "Written Paintings". In this case it will be: "Written Painting by John Zorn". I thus arrive to the condition of the interpreter / "maker" of a work I have not created. It is a challenge launched at you but also at me. My proposal is also being with the objective of creating a set of paintings which would be the result of different languages or meta-languages, from interpretations of interpretations Being able to count on your participation would be a great pleasure. Yours respectfully, Martinho Dias P.S. I believe that, once you participate in my project, you automatically authorise me to include your text ("written painting") and your name in the painting title, with the purpose of public exhibition. -- SAPO ADSL.PT, apanhe já o comboio da Banda Larga.
