Any recommendations for someone who owns no cds with Han Bennink on it?
Maybe for history's sake, I'd begin with Eric Dolphy's "Last Date", in which you'll also find Misha Mengelberg. Bennink's playing is basically straightforward here but it's an incredible document anyway. There's this album with Peter Brötzmann and Misha Mengelberg on FMP, "3 Points and a Mountain... Plus", which is a great live recording, although the sound quality isn't superb. I'm not a die-hard free improv fan in general, but this is one of those records I keep coming back to often. He's played with The Ex very often, and all those albums, with some amazing lineups like The Ex Orkest, sound great. I've played these records a lot lately, and I love this hardcore/free-jazz/improv clash with such impressive results. Bennink also recorded a duo album with The Ex guitarist, Terry, which I never managed to listen entirely. I consider both players superb but maybe it's too harsh, I don't know. "Dissonant Characters" with Ellery Eskelin (hatOlogy) is a very good sax/drums album, and it seems that their live shows were a blast. I missed them here unfortunately. Maybe duo is a good format for you to check Bennink's "maniac" playing at its best, so there are other remarkable ones with Chadbourne, C. Taylor, Derek Bailey, Dave Douglas, Myra Melford, ... And there's another album that comes to mind that portraits his playing very well, imho, which is "Cheer Up" by Christy Doran/Ray Anderson and Bennink on Hathut. Although i haven't played it for years, the playing is incredible and Bennink is 100% enjoyable. As I'm writing I realize that most of what I've heard from Bennink is good, at least as far as his performance is concerned, but perhaps he's easier to appreciate in small groupings. Oh, and if you have a chance to listen/watch a bootleg from his performance at Victoriaville with Mike Patton and David Slusser don't miss it!
