I used to really be into Laswell but got burned out on his work a few years ago. I have the whole Axiom catalog minus the new stuff (e.g. Tabla Beat...) and most of the Subharmonics, and the ones that still hold up tend to be the ones where Laswell doesn't do much or any playing. Here are my recs. AXIOM Praxis "Mutatis Mutandis" -- Bernie Worrell, Bootsy Collins, Buckethead, Afrika (from the Jungle Bros) Sola -- Very interesting mix of Chinese classical music and blues. w/Amina Claudine Myers, Henry Threadgill, Umar Bin Hassan (Last Poets), Wu Man. Axiom Ambient -- Very nice ambient mix of Axiom tracks. Maleem Mahmoud Ghania f/ Pharoah Sanders - Blows away the Ornette/Jajouka record. Simon Shaheen "The Music of Mohammed Abdel Wahab" Henry Threadgill "Too Much Sugar for a Dime" - Still for me the best Threadgill album. SUBHARMONIC For the most part these can be avoided. I think the Laswell/Thaemlitz collaboration "Web" holds up the best; the disc with Tetsu Inoue is also interesting, very dark and droney. The Subharmonic sublabel (with the black jewel cases) can also be avoided. The best one of these is the first Cypher 7, a nice ambient/dance/pop disc. FAX Haven't heard all of Laswell's work here, but his appearances on "Dark Side of the Moog IV" are the worst tracks on the album, and he almost ruins "Outland 2" with his bass and beats. Reviews of most FAX discs are available at www.2350.org. Ben

Thanks a lot Pat. "Seven Souls" was a recommendation that someone made several years ago that I completely ignored and it proved to be a mistake. I'm also wondering how many of those Material albums are available nowadays.

Hi there Efrén...
I'm definitely not a Laswell expert, but I absoultely love the Material album "Seven Souls" - which sort of takes us full circle to the William S. Burroughs thread of a few days ago. Great stuff.
About the "Naked Lunch" DVD - just read a review last week that there is a 2-DVDs Set out that has Burroughs reading excerpts of the book in the special features section. Sounds interesting, doesn't it?

knew his discography has enormous proportions so I thought it would be good to ask you what you think are his ESSENTIAL albums, regardless of genre (dub, ambient, funk, whatever). Painkiller is covered yet. I never thought I'd get this guys work...
