in the francis davis story, this line (written by davis -- not a quote) caused me pause -- it seems to fall exactly on the line separating profound and absurd: The composer and arranger Billy Strayhorn was a notable exception (to the apparently all straight jazz world of the time), but he was perfectly happy to spend his career in Duke Ellington's shadow, which was the same as being in the closet.
