Swell and Schlicht have toured and recorded together in Europe and the US. Their previous release with Implicate Order received critical acclaim. With the dynamic rhythm section of Tom Abbs and Geoff Mann, the quartet focuses on both compositions and open improvisation, explores the possibilities of brass and rhythm, and uses multiple layers of sound with extended techniques. Pianist Ursel Schlicht was called "a European talent who has the skill and finesse to number her among the best of the free improvisers on either side of the Atlantic" (Steven Loewy, allmusicguide, 2002) has divided her time between New York and Germany for the last seven years and works with numerous ensembles playing improvised music and jazz in Germany, the US, Russia and Mexico. She has recorded four CDs as a leader (on Cadence, Leo and Hybrid Records) featuring her original and energetic improvisations. Steve Swell is "one of the truly underrated modern masters of his instrument" (Scott Hreha, One Final Note, 2000) and has developed his personal sound on the trombone, working with stellar musicians from jazz mainstream (such as Lionel Hampton and Buddy Rich) as well as avant-gardists Anthony Braxton and Jemeel Moondoc. He has recorded seven CDs as a leader and is featured on more than 40 recordings as a side musician. Neues Kabarett has presented a monthly series of avant-garde/free-jazz and experimental music concerts for more than 3 1/2 years. We seek to create performing opportunities for established and emerging artists (sometimes involving visual artists, dancers and poets as well as musicians) and develop the viability and visibility of new performance spaces. NK is a volunteer-run collective. The Brecht Forum is a place for people who are working for fundamental social change and a new culture that puts human needs first. Within its loft in central Manhattan, the BF offers a year-round program of classes, lectures and seminars, art exhibitions, performances, popular education workshops and language classes.
