Now-a-days it's more likely I'll listen to Beefheart over Zappa.
goes without saying. It's like the difference between Duke Ellington and Glenn Miller. Or Stanley Kubrick and Stephen Spielberg. np: Haino and the Ruins -- Knead.

Are there any shitty Captain
Beefheart records, then?
I would steer clear of 'Unconditionally Guaranteed' and 'Bluejeans and Moonbeams'. They kind of suck ass. Even Beefheart said so. If you're worried about the somewhat later records, don't be. 'Doc at the Radar Station' and 'Ice Cream for Crow' both pack a wallup.
As does Shiny Beast Bat Chain Puller, although I never really liked that track Harry Irene.
Ditto on Unconditionally Guaranteed and Bluejeans and Moonbeams.
Everything else is amazing.
Now-a-days it's more likely I'll listen to Beefheart over Zappa.
