Context can make all the difference: It's worth noting that last night's performance at the Vanguard was not by Frisell's trio (which had been there a week earlier) but by the Motian-Lovano-Frisell trio, where I'd expect Frisell would stick more closely to his traditional roles of supporter, colorist and soloist in that group than to the acoustic folk-based things he's been doing on his own lately.
