Hi, Ben, I think this is almost certainly a case of vast overkill. I've got the NIGHT & DAY vinyl EP that FMP released some time ago, and frankly, except for Schlippenbach, I find these guys out of their depth playing this kind of music. (And I like them all in more natural contexts.) One problem might be they approach the standards in a completely straight way, no parody, no exaggeration. Rudiger Carl once told me that the idea was for them to go, as no names, into places where free jazz or "improv" is never heard and perform as if they were any small jazz combo. And there's no mention of Lol Coxhill or S-A Johansson providing vocals.... I was really suprised that no one mentioned the Hudson Riv disc (Grob) on their best of lists.
