I just moved from the SF Bay Area back to my home town, Colorado Springs, Colorado. I'm pleased to note that there's more good stuff going on than there was 5 years ago, but still, SF it is not. The difference in living here is that I'm more likely to go see shows that I'm kinda lukewarm about; I had to drive about an hour to get to the really good record stores in SF and Berkeley, and I'll have to drive to Boulder or Denver now. I grew up here & so I've been doing mail order to get good records since I could afford stamps, and now I'm getting a business license and starting my own record biz. And Zach's advice - book shows yourself - is dead-on. The South has some really great music of many stripes, and if you're willing to hustle and/or do some driving, you can have more fun than a broke New Yorker, even if your opportunities are fewer and further between. also, do most of the people on this list live in
new york? if so, it must be nice. i live in god forsaken georgia.
I don't mean to get into a pissing contest with you, but I live in northeast Mississippi. The key is not to creeb and grotch about your circumstances, but to get the most out of them. Did you go to the Lytton/Lovens/Vandermark concert in Atlanta last month? I'm sure there's all sorts of interesting live music in Georgia, and not just in Atlanta and Athens. As for record stores -- thanks to the magic of UPS and FedEx, Aquarius Records and DMG are as close to my house and your house as they are to Steve Smith's and Fearless Leader Rizzi's.
I'd be interested to hear from NYC zornlisters on this. Do you take full advantage of your location and make it Gigsville every night? I think if I tried to, I'd be bankrupt within three months.
Welcome to the list, by the way.
