I don't know if it's my age (in my 40's) or what but I am not excited about new 'rock.' RIght now I am sort of discovering what was left in the closet (rockabilly, 50's jazz, French pop from the 60's) and that is what turns me on now. Also I am into bands that have a visual sense - and for that reason I like The White Stripes. I have seen them live and they; were great - but to tell you the truth I much prefer to look at their photos than listening to their music. THe visuals excite me more than their songs. So in a nutshell the visual aspects of rock are important to me. Sometimes more important than the music. This is what I get for being raised in the glam era! The last album I bought with the masses was Radiohead's 'Kid A.' I eventually sold it - because I realize that I like Thom Yorke's voice and I like the band's melodies - but it doesn't grab me emotionally. It was pretty music - but for me it didn't have that edge. Or it wasn't twisted enough for my taste. So, the only artist I would buy now that is sort of big (at least he has a sizable cult) is Morrissey. I for sure will be one of those who will buy the new album when it first comes out. And speaking of Morrissey, anyone hear his 'Under the Influence.' It is a collection of his favorite music. It has of course New York Dolls, The Ramones, but also some obscure Rockabilly tunes. Including Charlie Feathers. It's a nice collection of music. -- Tosh Berman TamTam Books http://www.tamtambooks.com
