I haven't been paying complete attention to this thread, but if you're interested in the way sampling has been involved in jazz and improv, Bob Ostertag's project is incredible: he had musicians (Mark Dresser and Joey Baron among them) record their most intense soloistic statements in a studio environment, then he rearranged them as an 'ensemble' composition, in ways, Mr. Dresser told me, that they never would be able to play with their own bodies and imagination. But then, this is the kicker, had them play their parts live, with him improvising on sampler WITH THEIR PARTS. There are studio (collage) and live recordings available from two separate projects from the same concept. Also, and this might go outside your interest, as it's more live, but the Evan Parker Electro-acoustic ensemble does some wild things, with 3 electronics/samplerers and the acoustic trio in tandem. The recordings (two on ECM) have really nice liner notes so as to sort out what's virtual and where. Ryan ___ "I always have a white canvas" Taku Sugimoto
