Tom Varner was already mentioned. I just wanted to throw in my album recommendations where he appears as a sideman: Steve Lacy "Vespers" (Soul Note) Ton Art "Mal Vu. Mal Dit." (hatART) Harabigani Brass (hatART) (1) is probably impossible to find, but I think one of Lacy's best song cycles. (2) and (3) still should be available, at least they are in Chicago. (2) features a lot of members of Polwechsel and has some interesting Varner compositions. (3) is a really pleasant and accessible album - all brass instruments + Jean-Jacques Avenel on bass. A few Swiss tunes, a few Miles Davis, and one long (10 min) beautiful composition by Varner. Speaking of Arkady Shilkoper (sp??) has anyone heard his albums on Boheme? I think there are 3 (or maybe some of them are listed under Misha Alperin's name). I couldn't find much info about these recs or even the label (which appears to specialize in Russian music). Ben

Can any one give me the names of players, and recordings on which they appear, who play jazz or improv French Horn? Any other "strange" contexts for this pretty traditional instrument?
Thanks,
Zach
