Hi Folks Dave in London here. Had a great time yesterday buying too many cds and listening to an in-store gig at Sound 323 by Simon H Fell. Up front and personal on the front row in a basement room that held about 20-25 people on a very humid afternoon. Double bass from the man and clarinet from Alex Ward. I loved the mix of composed and free parts. A version of 13 Rectangles was played (the quintet version cd of which I bought from the man himself along with Axis of Cavity a trio cd with Simon Rose on alto and Steve Nobel drums). So now I'm wondering where next for recorded Fell. I'm sure that the Wire mentioned some great trio pieces but memory being what it is... Also one of the many cds I bought from the shop was Sonny Sharrock's "monkey - pockie - boo". Two things. Firstly I think someone mentioned bad Sunspots pressings. Well my copy had loads of plastic off cuts on the cd, that looked like scratches at first. Also Sunspots only appears as the copyright name on the backcover. Its in an Actuel sleeve, which is a bit naughty I thought. Mind you, licenced from Charley who have always been trouble causers. Secondly This was my first exposure to Linda Sharrock. Painful in places, appropriate at others. Not enough "git-box" (as my blues pal calls it), though what there is, is fine. I'm sure this lp has been mentioned here before. Is this a good introduction Sharrock lp or should I be looking elsewhere? The only other record I have is "Highlife". Opinions? Yr Pal David H.
