Other bands of interest would include Isis (another Patton reference there), Queens of the Stone Age, Lightning Bolt, The White Stripes, etc. And since the almighty Prong are still around and are about to release a new album, I'd say definitely check them out (three of their new songs sounded great in concert last week).
On the more left-field side of things, I'd definitely recommend Fushitsusha, Reynols, and Sunn O))).

Further to those, anyone into the likes of those groups should check out Sightings, and the unbelievably good Norwegian trio Noxagt - bass/drums/electric violin thuggery played by people who love Black/Satanic Metal maneuvers, but haven't adopted the subculture as a lifestyle choice. The bassist is in fact Kjetil D Brandsdal, who's previously appeared on Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace! label. Proof that a coherent social democracy and a beneficent welfare state needn't hamper the production of wicked riffology.
