Hi there, Some days ago I asked about Kayo Dot because I found it surprising that a metal band was squeezed in the Tzadik catalogue. But after listening to it, that doubt has vanished because that's not what I'd call metal by any means. In fact, they're much closer to one of those Chicago post-rock groups, but even more sedative. Besides some very occasional heavier outbursts, the music is really smooth, spacious and I'd say even poppy at some points, with a vocalist that reminds me a bit of Sam Prekop or something like that. Even the guitars are soft, in the manner of The Sea and Cake and elaborated-pop bands in that vein. There's a chamber-ish feel in some sections, but I wouldn't say it's specially remarkable or decissive for the overall sound, just "classical" instruments added unexpectedly to a rock environment. These are my first impressions, which might change with repeated listenings, but I found the album to be very enjoyable, which is the important thing after all.
