It seems to me that that's more of an "innovation" in record collecting than it is in production as such.
But in this case (as with most hip hop producers) the record collection is the tool, the palette, so El-P's record collection is analogous to Thurston Moore's modified guitars and pedals or kevin shields' wall of "glide guitar." Either way, his production is as innovative (if not more) than the samples that he begins with. Has anyone here heard "Fantastic Damage", Cannibal Ox's "the cold vein", or Company Flow's "little johnny from the hospital"? andrew
