I think that "Evol" meant the real definition of Sonic Youth's sound and it actually made them look as one of the most promising and personal bands at that time. However, as you say, it's obvious that they've improved and that they confirmed those early promises, although many people seem to have forgotten about them since "Washing Machine", which I assume is their most successful album commercially speaking (not among the fans, that's for sure). A pity for those who have lost touch with SY. They keep on releasing enormous albums.Best,
