Looking for Amy suggestions.
What does anyone know?
If you can find any Tone Dogs, her early band that broke her out of the ranks of the unknown and which also includes Fred Chalenor, they're reputed to be excellent. I can personally vouch for Ankety Low Day, but I've read that the Early Middle Years on Soleilmoon is also good. For more recent work, her work with Chris Cutler is top notch, particularly the (EC) Nudes and the Science Project. She fills the same role in Cutler's recent music that Dagmar Krause did in Henry Cow, and both of these albums are highly recommended. I've also got a Billy Tipton Memorial Sax Quartet album, Pollo d'Oro, which was recorded during a trip to the former Soviet Union with the members of Ne Zhedali, which I also enjoy. Albums of hers that I've enjoyed somewhat less include here solo album Tongues and her collaboration with Francisco Lopez, Belle Confusion 00. One of my favorite songs from (EC) Nudes, Salvatore, is on Tongues, but with the (EC) Nudes the song rocks, and it's a languid polka accompanied only by an accordion on Tongues. Very disappointing. Belle Confusion 00 isn't bad, but it's a Lopez album all the way, and like many Lopez albums, nearly indistinguishable from other Lopez albums (and I'm one of his fans). One would never guess that Amy Denio was anywhere on it. -- Caleb Deupree cdeupree@erinet.com
