Hi Marcin and everyone else, I completely agree - you have to take the time to listen and hear a tune develop. If you pay attention, you can hear the main groove of a song (which only becomes obvious after 7-15 minutes) from the very beginning, but it takes concentration (and perhaps more than one listen). It's as if they have a funky groove in mind, but spend 10 minutes 'abstracting' it until it bursts through. What is really amazing about that band is that each member is so damn good at it - they work together so well. My own 'blown away' experience happened at a live show in 1997. I had never heard them (or anythign by berne) before, but the zorn list was buzzing with talk about how great bloodcount was, so when i saw an announcement in the local paper, i went (and dragged 5 or 6 friends along). There were maybe 15 people there, and Berne began the festivites by telling everyone, in no uncertain terms, to be quiet. With no other announcements, the music started, and we were all afraid to make any noise at all. As the music progressed, intimidation turned into awe. After the last note of the second set had died out, we were all dumbstruck and basically overwhelmed by what we had seen and heard, so there was general silence and some tentative whispering amongst audience members. The musicians started to break down their equipment, and finally Berne says, 'It's o.k. to talk now.' Rarely have I witnessed a group of musicians have such a profound impact on an audience. Still blown away, whit On Thu, 15 Jul 2004, Marcin G wrote:
As a big Berne fan, I see your point. However, while bloodcount is rewarding, it is not easy to get ionto the music: one has to listen to long tunes, and the best moments of the discs usually come after some 15+ minutes. It's only after I took bloodcount to a potrable cd player for a walk that I got blown away by the band. Marcin
----- Original Message ----- From: "William W. Schonbein" <wwschonb@artsci.wustl.edu> Honestly, it's a shame (assuming that he's still selling the first pressing) that Tim even has thesee bloodcount discs still for sale - the music is so good, he should have been sold out YEARS ago. I remember that I had almost given up on jazz music, but then I heard bloodcount, and the rest was history...
