on the anticon tip - has anyone else checked out
Hymie's Basement? it's on lex, a division of warp, and it's one
of the guys from clouddead and somebody else (sorry, i'm not really hip to this
scene, man). anyway, it's extremely verbose with really strange/cool
production featuring lots of queasy piano loops. it was one of those
listens where i was more intrigued than anything else. i'm still
not quite sure if i really liked it, but it was interesting enough to
go back to at least once.
i don't know if it even actually qualifies as hip
hop. too.......something....avant-garde? (at least for hip
hop)
yes,
i'm white. so are the guys in hymie's basement. does that
matter?
and the same can be said of MCs. it irritates me that when i tell people
that i listen to some hip-hop, it is things like eminem or black-eyed peas
they immediately imagine. the possibilities of rythmic word play are only now
being charted. i will be very surprised if doseone ( of themselves, cLOUDDEAD
etc) does not fast become one of the most important artists of recent times.
not to mention other MCs really streatching the medium: Sage Francis, Noah23,
and, most recent effort excluded, Aesop Rock.
