John (and others): Sorta what you expect when you get two of the best improv bass players together. The two shifted effortlessly between arco and pizz with no attempt to outplay one another, but to mesh with what the other was doing. Kowald did his expected shtick of singing into the bass, but my favorite part(s) were probably the rsult of forgetfulness. At certain points WP and PK would take the time to put the bow into the holster with one hand. Just using the fretting hand somehow allowed them to come up with the same sounds that other need two to produce. Other good shows were: Polwechsel, The Neck, Bauer and Takase and the Fujii half of Fujii and Yoshida. Keith Tippett's Tapestry had good portions. But many of the 25 top-flight Brit Improvisers on stage seemed underutilized. Ken Waxman --- John Thomas <jgthomas@nortelnetworks.com> wrote:
In response to someone's question about Victoriaville - some of the best shows for me (keep in mind I missed Fred Frith) were (in no particular order) - the Hamid Drake/Gerry Hemingway Duo, William Parker/Peter Kowald ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Thanks for your comments on Victoriaville. Can you say some more about this one? This looks like an interesting combination.
