I was actually listening to Lurie's "Pieces for Bandoneon" (Les disques du crèpuscule) yesterday and, well, it has some inspired moments but at some points the way the tunes develop seem to me a bit "hesitant". Of course, there are fine melodies there but I was expecting more. And unfortunately, Ribot's role is just supporting there.
While Pieces for Bandoneon has, as you say, interesting moments, his later bandoneon record (also with Ribot on nylon-string), Selling Water by the Side of the River, is uniformly superb. -- Caleb Deupree cdeupree@erinet.com
