Ditto Swafford's Brahms biography. I've also greatly enjoyed the nicely done paperback series of bios put out by Phaidon, the art-book publisher. I very much enjoyed the Stravinsky, Sibelius, Bartok and Ligeti books in that series, and hope to tackle more in days to come. Brief, cogent, not too technical and pretty good with the context surrounding an artist's life. OK, recommendation time again. I'm looking biographies of classical composers but want ones with a "life and times" approach rather than detailed chronology and musical analysis.
