The Egoyan DVDs on Zeitgeist are really nice, especially for the director's commentary. It's clear the he has thought long and hard about what he wants to convey, and is very honest about the relative successes and failures of certain scenes/techniques. I think his best films are Calendar and Speaking Parts (I've seen the latter about 10 times, and it never gets old). Ararat is one of the few essential films from the last few years. A pretty damning critique of Hollywood's treatment of history -- a film about the Armenian genocide can only be accessed through an American/Christian/revenge fantasy filter! Brilliant. I don't see the Maddin/Haynes connection at all. Far From Heavan was really disappointing, and now seems especially redundant given the rerelease of Fassbinder's Ali: Fear Eats the Soul. Is there a more beautiful line than "Think much. Cry much."? Ben

One I forgot was Guy Maddin- a brilliant Canadian director, esp. with Careful (though I heard good things about Tales from the Gimli Hospital. Sets his films in the style of other early silent films but with psycho-sexual undertones. Now that I think of, sounds kind of like Todd Haynes I guess.
Another favorite Canadian director is Atom Egoyan. His latest, Ararat from last year, is one of the best of his I've seen. He loves playing with history and narrative, all of which confuse and confound the characters in his stories.
ah you're right i loved "the adjuster" and "family-viewing" is a real good movie along with soderbergh's "sex lies and videotapes" (good but not as good)
