I'm just getting back to reading through a lot of old e-mail from when my computer was in the shop & found this from last week: At 8:13 AM -0600 4/29/04, "K. Scott Handley" <thesubtlebody@yahoo.com> asked:
Hello all:
Could anyone who has issue 7.2 of the magazine RESONANCE (not the style and pop culture glossy, but rather the older LMC publication focusing on new music, improvisation, etc) please forward to the list the favorite "ethnic" (hmmm...their term...) recordings of John Zorn and (if you're feeling really generous) the other respondants to the issue's survey: David Toop, Evan Parker, Viv Dogan Corringham, Steve Beresford, Clive Bell, Robert Reigle, Robert Wyatt, Pat Thomas. I don't have my issue anywhere near my side of North America right now and I don't know anyone with one. I think it would be good list discussion fodder, perhaps....?
FWIW, this issue of Resonance is still listed as being in print on the LMC Web site <http://www.l-m-c.org.uk/>, so you can still buy it. But here's a scan of Zorn's list (I think I got most of the text corrected, though I wouldn't recommend using the catalog numbers to order anything without checking them first), followed by typed listings from the other :
My Favourite Ethnic Recordings John Zorn
FOR THIS LIST I HAVE CHOSEN MOSTLY music from classic LPs and CDs that are still relatively available in some form or another. My prize collection is on 78 rpm discs and concentrates on Japanese instrumental music from the Taisho period (1912-1925) featuring the early incorporation of western instruments such as the accordion, guitar, slide guitar, celeste, organ, piano, xyl;ophone, and saxophone with shakuhachi, koto and shamisen. Artists include Wada Hajime, Kawamoto Haruku, Mikami Hidejoshi, Sakai Motoyoki and Kanda Joshi performing Japanese uninyo (folksongs "hot" jazz covers and startling originals. These bizarre varieties may be impossible to fins but they certainly top my list of favourite ethnic musics.
