Heard the 10 pm set last Saturday with grand expectations. Overall, the set was unremarkable and covered common tunes from the Masada songbook. Their energy peaked mid-set with a brief period of brilliance led by Zorn and Medeski. The show rapidly waned into groovy dribble and a particularly disappointing experiment with a drum synth mastered by Saft. Dunn's basslines were predictable and I heard far too little out of Baptiste and Ribot. Wollesen's undulating rhythms proved consistent with his excellence. Improvisation wasn't nearly as adventurous as I've heard previously; they never tapped their collective potential. In the artists' defense, the room was hot as hell and they played with gusto for most of the set, finishing up sweaty and beat. So many moments of frenzy in the making...never attained. A pity. (but it still beat listening to Zevulun on my shitty stereo - or did it?) Hope to see some of you at the Improv night this Saturday.
