Hey List, it's the holidays. What's the best gift of music you ever got?
My parents got me Kiss 'Alive II' for Christmas in 1977. I do not exaggerate a single iota when I say that was the single most decisive musical gift I ever got. Everything I've done since then can be traced back to the way that set fired my interest and imagination. Runner-up: Back in 1993, I asked my mom to get me the Nessa Art Ensemble box set, which at the time was still mail-order only (and my mom's not an avid mail-order consumer). And it arrived! On time! Second runner-up: Last year, my girlfriend's family all chipped in to get me the Kiss box set, while I gave my girlfriend the "Bristol Sessions" 2CD set from the Country Music Hall of Fame. This year, she's getting the Harry Smith box, which will certainly benefit me as well. Steve Smith ssmith36@sprynet.com NP - Amon Amarth, "Bloodshed," 'Versus the World' (Metal Blade)
